What Is The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides support for Australians who are under 65 years old and have a permanent and significant disability; that is, a disability that is likely to last for your lifetime and that affects your ability to complete everyday tasks.

In Victoria, over 100 000 people benefit from participation in the NDIS — for 40 000 of those people, this is the first time they have received the support services they need. We are happy to be a small part of that here in Moorabbin. The scheme is implemented by the National Disability Insurance Agency, who help participants develop an NDIS plan that details your personal goals, aspirations and any support you need to get you there.

Participants may only require support in certain areas of their life — travel, for example, or employment and community activities — while others may need more assistance to improve the quality of their everyday lives.

As time passes, your NDIS plan will inevitably change. Having a support coordination expert on your side will allow you to allocate all your funding properly, manage what services you need (and what ones you don’t) and connect you with Moorabbin service providers.

There is nothing more painful than having a disability which you cannot be able to go about without much of a problem. Even though most of the people living with disabilities have the support of family, friends, charities and organizations, there is nothing more important than making sure that their needs are properly taken care of without any issues. There is nothing more frustrating than when a disabled person wants to perform a certain task and they are not able to do it unless they find the right help that is needed. It is for this reason that people living with disabilities in Moorabbin are encouraged to apply for the National Disability Insurance Scheme to make sure that their needs are catered for. Here are some of the things that you need to know about NDIS.

To be able to qualify for NDIS, you must be an Australian citizen or hold a protected special category Visa. There are many expatriates that have come to Australia over the years seeking for greener pastures and who feel that they need to be part of the insurance scheme. This is however not true and the only way to make sure that you meet the criteria is to fall in the above criterion. Though you may have a disability, you will not be able to apply for NDIS unless you are under this class.

There are many diseases that people are currently facing due to old age. Some of them are quite dangerous and will lead to people getting disabled and without the proper means on how they are going to cope with everything. As such, it is important to make sure that you know the right age of the person that is in need of NDIS. The age cap for people living disabilities who are eligible to apply for NDIS is people under the age of 65 years. However, this does not mean that they cannot receive the support from the government since there are other forms of cover from the government that can help them.

Again, it is important to note that not all forms of disabilities are going to be covered by NDIS and before you apply for the insurance scheme, it is important to check if you fall under the right category. Basically, the scheme is aiming at helping people who have permanent and significant disability which impacts everyday activities. There are certain types of disabilities that are not as bad as people may want to see them hence if you do not have the above qualifications, then there is no need to proceed to apply.

If you are a disabled person living in Moorabbin, you will also be required to come up with a tailored plan and goals that you intend to achieve over the next period of 12 months from approval. It is less likely that your NDIS will be approved if you do not have a tailored plan and a set of goals that you intend to meet over the period. Each person applying for NDIS must have a set of goals and a plan on how they will meet them
